In July 1979, the Butte Valley Clinic opened in Dorris, California. At that time it was a satellite of Northeastern Rural Health Clinics, Inc. based in Susanville, California. The clinic was 1200 sq ft and was staffed with one National Health Service Corps family nurse practitioner and two untrained C.E.T.A. workers. In 1980, another National Health Service Corps family nurse practitioner was assigned to the Dorris Clinic,. In 1981, a small satellite clinic was opened in Tulelake, California one day a week. So many people were traveling from Tulelake to Dorris for services that it made sense to open a clinic there. In 1982, a local 501(c)(3) corporation was formed and a break from Northeastern was made. This turned control over the clinics to local board members who knew the needs of the community better and could serve the community more efficiently. The Dorris Clinic added 800 sq ft in 1983 to provide more services. Demand for services strained the facility's ability to provide that service. In 1983, the satellite Tulelake Clinic's hours were expanded to two days a week. The demand for services was overwhelming. In 1985, the Tulelake satellite clinic's hours were expanded to three days per week. This was because pressure for more services in the area was great. In 1987, the Tulelake satellite building was purchased and three exam rooms added. Services were expanded to four days per week. In 1989, another family nurse practitioner was added to the staff and services were expanded to five days per week. In addition to local farm and ranch workers, the clinics serve a large number of transient workers, many of whom have been chronically underserved and thus have long-standing unusual, and perhaps neglected medical problems. Primary and preventive care is most needed. Without this care being available, people often forego routine care and postpone care until problems become so serious they end up in a hospital emergency room.

We have a preschool and kindergarten program for two-year-olds, who are potty trained, through six-year-olds. Also a latchkey after-school program for children 6 to 12 year old. Our Montessori school is an affordable, high-quality program. We have highly trained teachers and a loving, supportive environment. We started as a small private school 10-12 years ago and grew since then to where we now serve about 100 children a year. Instruction is based on the Montessori philosophy that a child learns through his own experiences with real things in a real world. We subcontract the free state preschool program for 3-4-year-old low-income children who live in the Butte Valley Unified School District. Or, pay to have your child attend, if you don't qualify. We have an agreement with the school district that rural children can be bussed to and from school.
