CLIMATE:

Sunshine reigns in Butte Valley on an average of 275 days a year. The high, dry climate provides warm summers and mild winters. When snow falls, it rarely stays on the ground more than 2-3 days. The average mean temperature is 48.4 with an annual precipitation of 13.06". The average high temperature in July is 79.6 degrees with an average low in January of 22.5 degrees. Although the weather is mild, WATER is plentiful with deep wells that are cold and pure.

ECONOMIC PROFILE:

Agriculture and ranching in Butte Valley, photo by Marjorie HazelwoodThe local economy is primarily agriculture/ranching with some retail/service components. The Characteristics of the labor force are predominately non-union. Although some mills (lumber) have union representation. There is currently no significant manufacturing and the major employers are federal, state, county, and local government agencies.

 

TRANSPORTATION/DISTANCES:

Transportation is provided via Highway 97 and Highway 161. Major airline connections can be made at Klamath Falls International Airport in Klamath Falls, Oregon (approximately 20 miles away). Mail is delivered via Postal Service, United Parcel, or Federal Express.

Distances: from Weed, CA - approx. 50 miles; from Mt. Shasta, CA - approx. 60 miles; from Redding, CA - approx. 120 miles. The center of the valley is 325 miles south east of Portland, Or.; 350 miles north of San Francisco and 23 miles south of Klamath Falls Oregon.

The nearest hospital is Merle West in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Housing is available through rentals ranging from $250 per month and up; existing homes range from $25,000 upwards. There is one hotel, two motels, one Bed & Breakfast Inn and one RV/mobile home park. Water is provided through private wells and sewer through private septic tanks, except for Dorris which provides city water and sewer facilities. Waste is disposed in a landfill located off of Highway 16 near Tulelake. Electric service is provided by Pacific Power and Light, with Propane also available. Education in Butte Valley is provided through two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school. There is a community college in Weed, California called College of the Siskiyous as well as the Oregon Institute of Technology in Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Butte Valley, except for the City of Dorris, is represented by a supervisor to the County Board of Supervisors which meets in Yreka. The City of Dorris has a City Council. Contact the city of Dorris: Phone - 530-397-3511, located at 307 S. Main St., Dorris, CA 96023.
