Comments: As the Designer of America's current National flag of 50 stars, I am looking forward to my participation in Dorris on July 4th, 2010.

I am planning on spending a week or so in Dorris and surrounding area. As a past Governor of Michigan Lions, I will be a part of the July 4th Celebration in Dorris as the 50 star version of "Old Glory" turns 50 years old this July 4th (2010). Over the last 50 years, I have spoken in all 50 states and 57 countries, but next July 4th, I'll be in Dorris. I hope everyone takes part in this historic event. I just can't wait.

Comments: Yeah!, I have lots of great memories of Dorris, My grandmother "Liz Ritchie" and my Aunt and Uncle, "Norma & Roy Kiser" lived there @ one time, I was born in "Hollywood" yes, and raised in Thousand Oaks, Ca "southern california" and as a kid I remember how much I looked forward to comming up for Thanksgiving once a year for a week, my Dad and all my uncles would go Duck hunting, or we would fish, it was so much fun, "I loved the way the it smelled with the snow it was so clean.

I did live in your town for a guess you might say a short time, was married for a "short time" to one of your residents, hope he is doing well, hope all of you are doing well.

Comments: I graduated from Butte Valley High School in 1939 and after graduating from nurse's training in Stockton in 1942, married John Vincent Brown who graduated from B.V.H.S. in 1932. Vint's father was custodian of the grammar school for sixteen years. He raised his three sons in Dorris, Richard, Vint and Lowell("Skeeter"). Vint passed away in 1957 and I have been married to Ralph Campfield for 47 years. I still love the smell of juniper after a summer thundershower, the view of Mt. Shasta from the north side and in fact, all of the valley. We were good friends with Claude and Virginia Olson, Herb and Mary Gordon, Melinda Meinecke, Donna Lang and many others. Comments: I was born in Klamath Falls Oregon because at the time my parents lived in Dorris there was no hospital. I lived in Dorris untill my parents Wilbur and Mary Welch moved to So. Ca. I lived there from 1948 - 1954. I remember playing "I get it" in the park and having great times there, We lived right accross the street from that park. My Dad owned one of the gas stations in town, I think the Shell station. My parents moved here to Sacramento in 1955 from Klamath Falls but they met in Dorris in December of 1954 at the Red Barn dance hall. Comments: I grew up in Klamath Falls, Or, in the 40's and 50's. We often traveled South through Dorris and I wondered what went on there. Later I heard stories of "The Red Barn" and the "Cal-Ore" nightclubs. But I was too young to remember them.

Recently my wife and I traveled up from San Francisco and I took a picture of the old Cal-Ore sign. I would like to get a picture of the "Red Barn" if it still exists...or some picture of it from the past if anyone has one.

I had one friend from Dorris: David Marts, who attended Mills grade school in Klamath for a couple years. His parents had a speed boat which David and I took to Lake Shasta once. Nice memory of that time. Dorris was fairly active then as was Klamath Falls, both enjoying the post WWII boom years.

Comments: My mother lived in Dorris in 1930-33. They were an Italian family and her step-dad worked at a mill there. His name was John Rosano and my mothers was Rina Trevisan. Was there only the one mill during that time, called Associated Lumber & Box Co.? We located the home they lived in, which is occupied by a family by the name of Andretti or something like that. Comments: I first passed through Dorris on a cold, snowy December night in 1973 to visit friends in Klamath Falls while I was on my way to Washington. I was on leave from the Navy and coming from San Diego at the time I forgot how bad winter weather can be. Althuogh the weather was bad the first thought I had while driving through town was that it looked like a nice place to live. I would never would have believed 15 years later I would move here. I have never regreted the move.

Comments: I was born in Dorris in my grandmother's (Selma Lilya's) Swedish Boarding House (1930)! My father helped build the sawmill and box factory in the mid '20's and rebuilt both the sawmill and box factory after the fire of '34. My unlce, Joe Lilya, had the Butte Valley Rodeo Association in that area until his death. We still do a lot of hunting and fishing in that area and visit Butte Valley, Picard cemetery and Dorris as often as we can. It will always be "home" to me.

It beats the diminishing Route 66...why hasn't anyone ever made mention of the fact that route 97 springs out of Weed,Ca. and grows all the way through the province of British Columbia ending at Watson Lake in the Yukon, turning into the historic Alaskan Highway? It sure is a surprising secret, don't ya think? Don't let them bypass Dorris with the highway. Let's keep 97 historic. Butte Valley's red (still operating)motor hotel building with one stall garages next to the rooms was incredible to see. Is it a heritage building? What year was it built?

Comments: I plan to visit Butte and Modoc Counties this summer and I'm amazed seeing the pictures of the scenery and wildlife roaming free throughout open land. I have never traveled northeastern california beyond Marysville and I-5 through Oregon, but I'm sure when I travel to Doris, Tule Lake and Butte County, it will make me realize and more aware how topographically diverse California as our state is, and I'm sure I will meet new people and hospitality when I do visit. Comments: My Great Grands(Adon & Mary Thomas) lived on the Dorris Ranch in the early 1900`s. I believe my Grandmother was married during those years Her name was Cecile L Maurine Thomas. She married Cecil Charles Ross. The Thomas family was large and I have that family tree done. Now I am starting the Ross family tree. My mother spent some time ther on visits, She was Leta M. Ross, born in 1922 in Alturas. I have lots of photos of family on ranch, one with Mr Dorris. They were killing jack rabbits and makinf piles of 12?.
